Recognize that no one “owes” you anything-you make it happen

Lots of people wait around for someone else to help make them successful. That won’t happen. You have to recognize that there’s nobody waiting in the wings to grant your wishes. Instead, you have to get to work and make good things happen in your life and in your career.

It’s wonderful illusion to think your company owes you more money because you’ve been with it for another year. Or that the government exists to make you successful. The brutal reality is that nobody will care about your interests with the same passion you do. If you want to make more, you need to get into action immediately rather than sitting back and waiting for your ship to come in.

Instead of hoping for the best, you need to light a fire in your life. You’ll need to change things. You’ll need to see opportunities where others only see obstacles. Some ways you can do this include:

  • Start looking for outside the box solutions: perhaps approach your boss and offer to work half your time at doing whatever adds the most value for your firm and delegate everything else to others. Use your spare time to work at what you’re genuinely good at.
  • Be prepared to take unusual or unconventional paths: forget chasing a paycheck and do things that unleash your own inner genius.
  • Recognize the opportunities that are all around you: and which you may have been too busy to notice before. Often there are sizable commercial opportunities right in front of your nose, but your eyes are not open.
  • Look for a more authentic fit in your workweek: perhaps offer to work four ten-hour days each week so you have one day free to pursue your passions. Or offer to work from home and be paid for your results rather than for your time.
  • Abandon what’s familiar: and find new ways to do your work that are dramatically better. Find something that is already working all right and come up with a way to supercharge it.
  • Schedule time to think: ideally entire days where you can reflect and generate creative ideas.
  • Don’t compromise what you have the ability and the passion to do. Be relentless in your pursuit–clarify the ‘what’ and the ‘how-to’ will begin to appear. No one has to wait for a sudden burst of intelligence, a bolt of lightning, or a mystical experience. While any of us would welcome a direct supernatural message to get us started on the path to success, it is not necessary. With what you have and where are, you can begin the process of finding productive, meaningful and profitable work.
